Hot and cold numbers
'Hot' numbers appear often; 'cold' numbers appear rarely. Both exist in every dataset — including datasets produced by a completely random process. That is the giveaway that they carry no information.
Why hot lists always exist
In any finite sample of random draws, some numbers will appear more than others. With 49 numbers and a few hundred draws, the most-drawn number is routinely 20–50% above the average — purely by chance.
The randomness lab shows this concretely: simulate a fair history and it produces its own 'hot' and 'cold' numbers, with the same spread as the real dataset.
What the data shows
The observed frequency of the most-drawn and least-drawn numbers in the real dataset falls inside the range that random simulation produces. Hot and cold are real descriptions of the past and meaningless descriptions of the future.
