Clustering: why random looks non-random
People are excellent at spotting patterns — so good that we see them in pure noise. Random draws routinely cluster: consecutive numbers appear together, the same pair repeats, and one number vanishes for a stretch.
The birthday-problem intuition
With 1,225 possible pairs in a 6/49 game, pairs colliding across hundreds of draws is not a surprise — it is a guarantee. The most common pair in any dataset of this size will have appeared many times, whether or not anything is 'going on.'
Consecutive numbers
Consecutive pairs like 17–18 feel too neat to be random. But combinatorics says a 6/49 draw contains at least one consecutive pair about half the time. The data and simulations agree: roughly half of real draws have one, and roughly half of simulated ones do too.
